It's Bullshit That The New Jersey Devils Now Have Another Brodeur In Net With Martin's Son, Jeremy
It's very rare that the son of "GOATs" go on to have careers of their own that live up to the expectations set by their fathers. Michael Jordan's sons didn't go on to become NBA legends, unless we're talking about Anthony Edwards. Wayne Gretzky's sons didn't go on to become NHL superstars. The jury is still out on kids like Charlie Woods and Bronny James, but it's hard to envision them recreating the magic that their dads captured.
By all accounts, I'm sure Jeremy Brodeur was a perfectly fine goaltender. He was a Memorial Cup champion, he had some good years in the ECHL, he was better than the majority of kids who ever put on a pair of goalie pads. But NHL generational all-time great? Probably not.
Or at least not until he put on a Devils sweater for the first time.
Last night Jeremy Brodeur started in net for the Devils in a preseason game against the New York Rangers. You guys know how in the movie "Like Mike", Lil Bow Wow put on a pair of Michael Jordan's shoes and immediately got his powers? Well it seems like Jeremy Brodeur putting on the "Brodeur" Devils uniform did the same thing.
You put Jeremy Brodeur in any other hockey uniform on the planet, and he's just an okay goalie. You put him in a Devils jersey and all of a sudden he's the best goalie on the planet. I don't know what kind of witchcraft or wizardry is going on here, but I don't like it. Not one bit.
I don't have any qualms with nepotism. I think it's perfectly fine to reward people who worked their ass off to achieve a great deal of success with a job for their kids. People who hate nepotism should really just hate their parents instead. But we still can't be having "Like Mike" situations in professional sports. Teams should only be allowed to have one generation of a generational athlete. You simply cannot allow them to have the next. Maybe I'd be willing to compromise here and say you just have to skip a generation. But as someone who is finally getting over years of watching a Brodeur completely own the Flyers, I can't fathom having to sit through another 10 years of it.
